kshitij'12 : REALM OF raaga

About US

With "REALM OF Raaga" as our theme, we want to bring into focus all the musical culture of the world. We want to see how world music blends together into one seamless transitional melody. Music is never singularly made. It is affected by many facets of life. To see all these facets of life come together due to one irrepressible quantity is exactly what we aim to achieve. We want to see kshitij'12 be a like a melting pot for people to come together into an absolutely different world, or rather, REALM as we call it. A raaga is a set of 5 or more musical notes upon which a melody is constructed. It is the basis of all music. The combination of notes interspersed with silence and percussion conveys a mood which is more important in defining the Raaga than the notes individually. "I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music." - Billy Joel What the famous musician Billy Joel is pointing towards is the universality of music. If any person, old or young, Black, White, Asian or Hispanic hears a particularly jumpy or fast beat, their foot automatically starts tapping to the rhythm of it. Music requires no medium of language. It is recognized and made worldwide. No one really went from place to place to teach humans about music. Humans, in different parts of the world separately came up with their own idea of music and musical instruments. Whether it was the Sitar, Harmonium, Veena or Tabla from India or it was the Guitar, Drums, Piano and Clarinet of the West, music was understood, composed and performed. Very simply speaking, with "REALM OF Raaga", we want to create a world of music in kshitij'12. Everything in kshitij this year will be defined with reference to music. Its very existence will be measured up in context of its musical potential.

Mithibai College believes in the overall growth of an individual such that when a student passes out of the institution, he moves at least a few steps ahead in realizing his true potential. To forward this cause, Mithibai College started with the annual inter-collegiate cultural festival, kshitij. kshitij is a festival that is run entirely by students of Mithibai College with teachers playing a guiding role. It is a festival that teaches students to conduct themselves in a professional manner, get a feel of everyday working and yet have a whole lot of fun and make friends. Working with fun is what kshitij is all about. Over a 100 colleges, 5000 participants, a footfall of 60000 people overall, Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Tusshar Kapoor , Shahid Kapoor and many more guests, kshitij has always been an event beyond par. Ishq Bector, Tochi Raina, Hard Kaur, Pentagram, Bappi Lahiri, Blackstrat Blues, Juggy D and many others rocked the stage with the crowds thronging to the venue. Events like Mr. and Miss kshitij, Belly Dancing, Street Dance, Just a Minute and many others had the audience spell-bound with the performances by participants from all over the country. Events of film-making also saw international participation from Korean, Australian, Egyptian and many other colleges and universities. Mithibai College believes in being fair and does not participate in its own festival. Instead, kshitij-ites play perfect hosts to the incoming colleges and make sure they cherish the memories they go back with only to come back again next year. This year, kshitij is to be held from the 11th to the 14th of December. With "REALM OF Raaga" as the theme, kshitij is going entirely musical. Each event is planned with keeping in mind the fun factor. With over 600 people working towards the festival, it is sure to be a huge success.
